  Homegrown helmet maker Studds Accessories aims to increase its market share in India to 40 per cent over the next three years. Sidhartha Bhushan Khurana, MD - Studds Accessories Ltd, confirmed the development to carandbike recently. The company expanded its production capacity to 14 million units per annum with the inauguration of two new facilities earlier this year. Studds currently holds a market share of 30 per cent in the helmet segment and aims to capitalise on the newfound push for personal mobility in the post COVID era. With India being the largest two-wheeler market in the world, the growth potential is immense for the company. A: “This has been a challenging time, not only for us, but the entire automotive industry which was already witnessing a slowdown since the previous fiscal. As a responsible corporate, we decided to halt all operations amongst our manufacturing facilities but this pandemic helped us to innovate and we started manufacturing face shields, protective goggles and face masks. Our manufacturing plants were closed only for eight days. We have been practicing social distancing at all our plants and regular employee screenings. Two-wheeler helmet maker, Studds Accessories, recently commissioned a plant in Haryana, which is the largest of its kind in Asia. Beyond producing 7.5 million motorcycle helmets annually, this facility will also roll out 1.5 million units for bicycle users. Leading helmet manufacturing company Studds Accessories on Monday said it has commissioned two new facilities at Faridabad in Haryana entailing total investment of Rs 200 crore. Spread across an area of over 5.5 acres, the company has made an initial investment of over Rs 160 crore to set up the largest helmet manufacturing facility in Asia, Studds Accessories said in a statement. Besides motorcycle helmets, including the Shifter and Thunder series, the facility will also produce bicycle helmets for domestic market, it added. The company said it has also commenced operations at another production unit which has in-house production line for expanded polystyrene (EPS), which is the most important safety feature in a helmet. Studds, the world’s largest helmet-maker by volume, aims to capture over 40 per cent of the domestic market over the next three years. The home-grown company has logged a CAGR of 32 per cent over the last three financial years and, despite the annoying pandemic, aims to grow at around 10 per cent in FY21 too.  “According to a 2018 report, 65-70 per cent of the market is for the organised or the ISI-certified players; whereas the rest of the 30 per cent is for the unorganised players.. According to a 2018 Frost and Sullivan report, we have a 27 per cent market share, which has grown to, I guess, 30 per cent now.   Late in July, the Ministry of Road, Transport and Highways released a notification laying down new norms for two-wheeler helmets under which all helmets will require ISI certification and the 1.2-kg weight limit has been dropped. Helmet manufacturers in India will not be able to manufacture, stock, and sell helmets that are not certified by the Bureau of Indian Standard’s (BIS) safety standards. The new norms will come into effect in March 2021. The two-wheeler helmet manufacturers association has welcomed the government’s decision, lauding it as a positive move towards curbing the sale of non-standardised helmets. The new BIS standards for helmets — which has done away with the weight limit for rider and pillion rider helmets — will help reduce costs by 10%-20% and will lead to a whole new range of low cost and low price helmets in the Indian market said Two Wheeler Helmet Manufacturers Association president Rajeev Kapur.   “Around 90%-95% of helmet sales, which are in the entry level category, will now be in the 700gm to 1.2 kg category where prices will be less Rs 1,000,” he said. The heavier and more expensive and will be restricted to the small niche of speciality riders, he added. Kapur’s Steelbird Helmets, has already launched a 700 gm light weight open face helmet priced at Rs 759 and another 800 gm open face helmet for Rs 849. “Earlier the weight restrictions meant that you could not sell to Department of Transportation (US standard DOT) or ECE (Economic Commission for Europe) certified helmets in India.
