IPL with 10 teams: How ‘new’ IPL teams fared in the past seasons

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is mulling to add two more teams to the Indian Premier League (IPL). Going by the agenda of the board's AGM, which take place on December 24, the official announcement regarding it would be made later this month. Should two teams be added to the league, it will be for the first time since 2011 that IPL will be a 10-team competition.

IPL had started as an 8-team competition. In 2011, 10 teams took part in the tournament. The number reduced to 9 for the next two years. IPL has remained 8-team tournament since 2014. As the fans wait for an official word regarding the new teams, we revisit past IPL seasons and have a look at how 'new' IPL teams fared in previous IPL seasons -

Rising Pune Supergiant

The star-studded side had the likes of MS Dhoni, Steven Smith, Ajinkya Rahane and number of other international players in its ranks. And it was Dhoni who was named as Rising Pune Supergiant's (RPS) inaugural captain. As the leader, Dhoni had his worst-ever IPL season as RPS only managed five wins from 14 matches.

The owners didn't keep faith in Dhoni and just a month after he quit national captaincy, RPS replaced him with Steven Smith. The Australian batsman had the experience of leading Rajasthan Royals in IPL and propelled RPS into the final, where they lost to Mumbai Indians by just 1 run.

It was a mixed run for RPS in IPL. In one season, they disappointed while in the next season, they played the final. Given their team combination, the Pune-based franchise would have given other teams run for their money had we seen more of them.

Gujarat Lions

Like Rising Pune Supergiant, Gujarat Lions (GL) too had mixed run in the league. They had Suresh Raina as their full-time captain in both seasons. During the two-year stint, Raina came out of Dhoni's shadow in IPL and led GL into the second round in IPL 2016. The Gujarat-based franchise registered 9 wins and topped the points table. Although, they lost both the Qualifiers and couldn't play the final.

In IPL 2017, GL only managed 4 wins from 14 matches and finished their IPL journey at the seventh spot in the table. GL and RPS were replaced by Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, who returned after serving the two-year ban period.

Kochi Tuskers Kerala

The only franchise which has been part of only one IPL season, Kochi Tuskers Kerala (KTK) participated in IPL 2011. The Kochi-based team's roster included the likes of skipper Mahela Jayawardene, VVS Laxman, Ravindra Jadeja and others. But the presence of star players didn't help the team's cause.

With six wins from 14 matches, KTK failed to qualify for the next round. It was the first and the last time that KTK participated in the IPL as the BCCI terminated the franchise.

Pune Warriors

The worst performing team in the history of IPL? Three seasons and not even one playoff appearance. Pune Warriors were part of IPL from 2011 to 2013 but their journey would end in the league stage on all three occasions.

In IPL 2011, they finished at the 9th spot while in 2012, they finished last. In 2013, Pune Warriors finished at the eighth spot in the nine-team competition. The biggest takeaway from the franchise was Rahul Sharma's performance as he made his India debut following his success in IPL.
